Day 3

STUDENT INFORMATION

*Happy STEM Week, Galvin! We have three STEM challenges open to the whole school all week, and each comes with a chance to win an Amazon gift card. First, there is a coding challenge. You can check your email to sign up and get started. Secondly, the cybersecurity contest developed by Mrs. Williams is now open. You may go to the Learning Commons website to find the first puzzle. Remember: Prizes go to the first three finishers. One additional prize will go to another finisher, chosen by lottery. Good luck! And finally, we have a daily trivia question. You should have received an email this morning with a Google Form to submit your answer. To celebrate the “S” in STEM, today’s trivia question is science-based. Are you ready? [insert trivia question]

*Picture Day is coming! Pictures will be taken next Wednesday, October 20th. This is also an early release day for students.

*Come join our new after school cornhole club on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the gym.  We will have a 5th and 6th grade division and a 7th and 8th grade division.  Sign up with a friend to create your team.  Limited space, so sign up fast!  Come join us for some fun, and toss some bags! Cornhole Club begins tomorrow October 19th, from 2:30-3:30. Please see Mr. Oteri in room 226 with questions. Registration is through Wakefield Academy.

*Attention all 8th graders.  The Yearbook Club is starting soon.  Join us, so you can create a memorable keepsake for your classmates.  Informational meeting will be Thursday, October 21, at 2:30, in Mr. Winiarski's room, 335.  Again, this club is for 8th graders only.

*Attention 6th, 7th, and 8th graders: There will be an informational meeting for students interested in joining the Diversity Club right after school TODAY in the 5th grade project room. The mission of the club is to create a safe space and promote the acceptance of all students, no matter how they identify. Please reach out to Ms. Warren, Mr. Cedrone, or Ms. Bahnsen if you can't make it today but would still like to join. All are welcome!

*Today’s Lunch: French Toast Sticks and fruit

PARENT INFORMATION

*This week is Mass STEM Week and activities are taking place at Galvin and schools across the state to help students "see themselves in STEM." With grant money from the Northeast Regional STEM Network, we are offering gift card prizes for our whole-school challenges. These include a cybersecurity challenge designed by our media specialist Katy Williams, an online CoderZ coding challenge designed to guide novices to explore the world of computer programming and mobile robotics, and daily trivia in the morning announcements! Students should check in with their science teacher for more information.

*Middle School Girls Try Hockey for Free* Learn to Play Hockey Program

Wakefield Youth Skating Association is  hosting a Middle school girls try free hockey program. This learn to play program is designed to introduce girls ages 9-14 to the sport of ice hockey.  Skaters are expected to be able to stand up on their own and make forward progress. This is for first time players. Sessions are November 28th, December 5th, December 12th, and December 19th from 1-2pm at Hockeytown USA. As part of this program WYSA has access to limited sets of loaner protective gear and skates that have been donated.  All skaters are required to wear full protective gear. Please visit  http://www.wakefieldyouthhockey.com

*As a reminder to all students, with the weather turning cooler and outdoor lunches continuing, we want to make sure all students are dressing appropriately. Please make sure to have a jacket or sweatshirt with you.

*Lost and Found: If any student has lost a water bottle in the past few days please check the blue bin in the main office entrance. If you left something behind during PE class, please check the area next to the bleachers in the gymnasium. Thank you.
