November 14, 2023 is Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. Wakefield Elementary students and staff will celebrate this day through educational school-wide assemblies to learn about the day.

Who is Ruby Bridges: In 1960, a federal court ordered Louisiana schools to desegregate. Ruby and five other students passed the school entrance exam to see if they can handle being in an all-white school. Ruby was the only student who showed for the first day of school on November 14, 1960. Ruby braved Frantz Elementary School on her own that day. At the tender age of six, Ruby Bridges advanced the cause of civil rights in November 1960 when she became the first African American student to integrate an elementary school in the South.

How Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day Began

In May 2018, A group of 5th graders from Martin Elementary School in California learned about Ruby Bridges' story and asked their school board the question…Why isn’t there a day named after Ruby Bridges? The students wanted to do something to help make a difference.

November 14th has been recognized as the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day and this year METCO has collaborated with all the elementary schools of WPS to participate in the first annual walk to school.

Today, we honor the bravery of Ruby Bridges.
